Tragedy affects all of us Last Updated: January 15, 2015 It was a sad day in Valley Center. The community lost one of its own under tragic circumstances Jan. 9. Wilma "P.J." Gresham died in a house fire in a Valley Center neighborhood. She was 69. Our hearts go out to Mrs. Gresham's husband, Larry Gresham, as well as their children, grandchildren and extended family. The grief must be unbearable. Fortunately, this type of tragedy doesn't happen very often. But one time is too many. The reality is in our communities, people are born and people die. We rejoice and we weep together. We help when we're called on. We pray. We give. We love. We forgive. We won't forget even as we move on and heal. Tragedies, unfortunately, are part of life in our communities. But we never go through them alone. We were proud last week of how our community's emergency responders handled this crisis. They were professional, efficient and compassionate. Even in their own grief — many responders on scene knew the family well — our firefighters and police officers stayed focused on their jobs. For some, their main priority was comforting family members and providing direction as firefighters and investigators completed their tasks. We don't want these tragedies to happen. But when they do, we're glad we're surrounded by people who care. — The Ark Valley News |
