VCMS boys split with Augusta, swept by Central
By The News staff
Last Updated: January 15, 2015

The Valley Center Middle School boys' basketball teams hosted a Pioneer League II matchup and non-league contests during the past week, coming away with mixed results.

The seventh-graders beat Augusta on the road Jan. 12, while the eighth-graders lost.

"Our kids continue to play hard, but we've got to find a way to get some confidence shooting the basketball, because success on the offensive end for our team inevitably leads to increased intensity on both ends," coach Josh Lee said.

Valley Center was swept by Andover Central at home Jan. 8.

"We ran into a tough team at all levels," Lee said. "Andover Central plays hard and has a lot of players who can really score the ball. Our kids fought hard, and I believe that if we can continue that kind of effort, we will be a team that nobody can accuse of not playing hard. We certainly have things we need to work on, but our effort, our execution and our attitudes were better last night, and that's something we were trying to stress."

The Hornets will play at Haysville Jan. 15 and will host Derby Jan. 22.

Eighth grade

Valley Center dropped to 2-6 (2-3 in the league) with a 32-24 loss to Augusta.

The Hornets battled back from a slow start to get to within four points late. But Augusta hit key free throws down the stretch and Valley Center had trouble converting enough baskets.

Augusta led 9-4 after the first quarter and 17-7 at halftime. The Hornets outscored Augusta 11-6 in the fourth.

Trenton Driskill finished with 17 points. Kolby Keeler added four and Waylon Chance three.

The Hornets fell to Andover Central 38-25.

Valley Center trailed 10-8 after the first quarter and 19-13 at halftime. The Hornets were outscored 19-12 in the second half.

Driskill led Valley Center with 12 points. Max Fields chipped in five. Chance had four. Parker Schrater and Keeler had two each.

"B" team — The Valley Center "B" team trailed big at halftime, but cut into Augusta's lead to make it a close contest, finally falling 37-32.

Augusta led 9-6 after the first quarter and 23-14 at halftime. Valley Center outscored Augusta 18-14 in the second half.

Zach Williams finished with 10 points. Blayne Hightower had seven. Jeren Carter, Brennan Ricks and Blake Holt had four each. Kyle Stamm had two and Storm Porter one.

In a back-and-forth battle, the Hornets fell in the final minutes, losing to Andover Central 32-30.

Valley Center let a 9-8 first-quarter lead slip away and trailed 21-16 at the half. The Hornets chipped away at the Andover Central lead and tied the game at 27 in the third quarter. Andover Central edged in front in the final quarter.

Holt had six points to lead the Hornets. Williams and Hightower had four each. Wyatt Jones and Gavin Fitch had three each. Stamm, Porter and Ricks each had two. Dylan Bastian and Carter had one each.

Seventh grade

The seventh-graders improved to 6-2 with a 32-29 victory over Augusta.

"They showed a lot of guts and poise to come away with a road win in a tough game," Lee said.

Valley Center led by two after the first quarter and by one in the second. Augusta took a 20-18 lead into the fourth quarter. The Hornets outscored Augusta 14-9 down the stretch.

Jakob Byrne finished with 15 points. Bryan Rascon added seven and Mason Burns five. Ray Flora had four and Caleb Fisher one.

Valley Center couldn't get into the game against Andover Central, losing 41-31 and falling to 3-2 in the league.

The Hornets trailed 12-5 after the first quarter and 23-11 at halftime.

Valley Center mounted a third-quarter comeback attempt, outscoring the visitors 11-5 to cut Andover Central's lead to six, but it wasn't enough. Andover Central went on a 13-9 run to end the game.

Byrne led two Hornets into double figures with 12 points. Fisher added 10. Flora finished with four and Caden Holle three. Mason Reed and Burns had one each.

"B" team — The Valley Center "B" team put the defensive clamps on Augusta for a 17-6 victory. Augusta scored two points in the first, second and fourth quarters. Valley Center led 9-4 at halftime.

Justin Gulledge had six points, Matthew Patterson four, Austin Wolff, Jace Crass and Josh Dessenberger two each, and Josiah Farney one.

The Hornets were outgunned by Andover Central, losing 40-17.

Andover Central extended a 12-point halftime lead to 23 in the third quarter. Both teams scored seven in the fourth.
