City hikes water rates along with Wichita By Chris Strunk Last Updated: January 08, 2015 Water rates in Valley Center are going up. Starting this month, the cost of city water will increase by nearly 9 percent. The cost of each 1,000 gallons of water (through 110 percent of the home's or business' average water consumption) will cost $4.08, up from $3.75. Water in the second tier of consumption (between 110 percent and 310 percent of average use) will increase from $12.06 per 1,000 gallons to $13.49. Water in the third tier will increase by $2.14 per 1,000 gallons (from $18.03 to $20.17). The rate increase, which the Valley Center City Council approved Jan. 6, was hit particularly hard this year because of a hike in the wholesale rates the city pays Wichita. Valley Center purchases water from Wichita and resells it to Valley Center residents and businesses. In the three usage tiers, Wichita water rates went up by 18 cents, 94 cents and $1.41 per 1,000 gallons. That was combined with the regular 4 percent annual increase the city has in place to equal the higher than normal rate increase. The council did not discuss the changes. In other business Jan. 6, the council: •Voted 7-1 to approve a resolution that amends a previous measure authorizing the city to spend money on a range of infrastructure improvements. The new resolution corrects the cost of the project to extend water service to residential customers along 69th North. The previous resolution did not include the amount paid by the project's benefit district, only the city at-large. The total cost of the project was $421,973, of which 29 percent will be paid by property owners who benefit from the water extension. Council member Judith Leftoff voted against the resolution. •Voted 8-0 to approve a resolution that authorizes the sale of temporary notes to pay for infrastructure improvements in the Valley Creek Estates subdivision as well as the water line extension on 69th North. •Gave first-round approval to an ordinance that changes the zoning of a residential lot on the northeast corner of First and Birch from single-family to multi-family to pave the way for the construction of a bi-level duplex. Final vote will take place Jan. 20. |
