Multi-fam housing fills a need in Valley
Last Updated: January 08, 2015

The Steppes have been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal housing market in Valley Center the past four years.

The duplexes, triplexes and now four-plex apartments along Sheridan and Cottonwood are practically the only new housing starts the city has seen the past four years.

Sure, there have been a few single-family homes built here and there since 2010, but the multi-family market has kept the needle moving forward for Valley Center.

We hate to say never, but single-family residential construction may have a hard time replicating the kind of pace it was on seven or eight years ago when the Prairie Lakes and Valley Meadows subdivisions were growing.

The city — and its property tax payers — should be thankful for The Steppes addition. It came at the right time.

Now, we're hoping to see the same kind of growth in the multi-family section of the Ridgefield subdivision near Sheridan and Fifth.

Residential growth has its problems. But there's no better substitute for increasing a community's property values.
