District Office sprinklers malfunction again
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: January 08, 2015

It happened again. Fortunately, this time the fire-suppression sprinkler system at the Valley Center School District Office broke on the outside of the building and not inside like last winter.

"I feel fortunate it was outside this time, but my frustration is off the charts," said Superintendent Cory Gibson.

About 3 a.m. Jan. 6, Valley Center firefighters were called to the District Office at 143 S. Meridian, where an alarm was sounding.

A sprinkler head in the exterior overhang of the building was spraying water when firefighters arrived.

There was no fire, Capt. Rob Tormey said.

Gibson said frozen condensation likely caused the sprinkler head to discharge, a similar problem to last winter.

The sprinkler system broke on Dec. 31, 2013, and again on Jan. 8, flooding parts of the building and causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.

"After extensive repairs and reviews by more than one company, we thought the sprinkler system was fixed," Gibson said.
