Frigid temps stick around after weekend storm

A weekend winter storm swept across the Wichita area, dumping 3 to 4 inches in some parts of north Sedgwick County, causing a few traffic accidents and giving school-age children a bitter cold end to their holiday vacation.

Precipitation began as a wintry mix of light sleet and snow, but transitioned to all snow by early evening Jan. 3, the National Weather Service said.

Since temperatures were near freezing, the snow had a high liquid content and stuck to everything.

Temperatures dropped rapidly throughout the day.

Highs remained below freezing through the first part of the week, dipping into the teens on Jan. 7. The low temperature Jan. 6 was near 0 degrees.

Highs were forecast to remain in the 20s and 30s through the weekend.

Area law enforcement reported a few wrecks related to the snowstorm.

On Jan. 3, a semi-tractor trailer jackknifed on the northbound side of I-135 in Park City and blocked both lanes. No injuries were reported.

Also that day, two Westar trucks slid off the road in the 600 block of West 69th North and two wrecks were reported on I-135 near the 77th North and 85th North exits.

On Jan. 4, a pickup overturned on I-135 near 77th North.

No serious injuries were reported.
